What Should You Do Before Professional Painters Arrive?

What Should You Do Before Professional Painters Arrive?

A little preparation before your painting crew arrives helps the project start on time, keeps your belongings safe, and lets the painters focus on painting. Here's a simple checklist for interior and exterior projects.

Before an Interior Project

Clear small items. Remove decor, photos, collectibles, lamps, plants, and anything fragile from the rooms being painted.

Take down wall hangings. Remove artwork, mirrors, shelves, and TVs mounted on walls. Note which hardware you want reinstalled.

Move what you can. Move smaller furniture out of the room. Larger pieces can usually be moved to the center and covered by the crew. Ask beforehand what your painters will move.

Empty closets that are being painted.

Clear access. Make sure the crew has a clear path to each room, the work area, and a place to stage materials.

Plan for pets and kids. Keep pets in a safe, separate area. Wet paint, ladders, and open doors aren't a good mix with curious kids or animals.

Before an Exterior Project

Move items away from the house. Pull back patio furniture, grills, planters, hoses, and decorations.

Trim plants and shrubs that touch the siding, if you can. This gives painters room to work and helps the paint dry.

Turn off sprinklers for the duration of the project so freshly painted surfaces stay dry.

Unlock gates and arrange access to all sides of the house, including backyards.

Park cars away from the house, especially if spraying is planned.

Let neighbors know if work will be close to a shared property line.

Things to Discuss With Your Painter

  • Final color and sheen selections for every surface
  • Which rooms or areas are included
  • Daily start and end times
  • Access to water and power
  • Bathroom arrangements
  • How you'll communicate during the project
  • What happens with leftover paint

The STRIPES Takeaway

Clearing rooms, removing decor and wall hangings, preparing outdoor areas, and confirming details ahead of time helps your painting project run smoothly. It also gives the crew more time for what matters: prep and paint.
