Paint Tip of the WeekColor & Finish

What's the Best Paint Finish for Interior Walls?

What's the Best Paint Finish for Interior Walls?

For most interior walls, the best paint finish is eggshell or a washable matte. But the right answer depends on the room, how much it gets touched, and how smooth your walls are. The goal is a finish that looks good in the light your room gets and can be cleaned as often as that room needs.

The Two Things You're Balancing

Every sheen trades appearance against durability:

  • Lower sheens (flat, matte) reflect less light, so they hide dents, patches, and drywall seams. Traditional flat paint is harder to clean.
  • Higher sheens (satin, semi-gloss) are tougher and wipe clean easily, but they reflect more light and highlight every imperfection.

Interior walls usually need something in the middle.

Room-by-Room Recommendations

Living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms. Matte or eggshell. These rooms see moderate traffic, and a soft, low-sheen look flatters walls and color. Today's premium washable mattes are a strong option if you prefer a flat look but still want to wipe off scuffs.

Hallways and stairwells. Eggshell or satin. Hands, bags, and shoulders brush these walls constantly, so cleanability matters more.

Kids' rooms and playrooms. Satin, or a scrubbable matte or eggshell from a premium line. Crayon, hands, and toys call for a finish that can take repeated cleaning.

Kitchens. Satin. Cooking leaves grease and splatter on walls, and satin cleans more easily than eggshell.

Bathrooms. Satin, ideally from a product formulated for humid rooms with mildew resistance. Good ventilation matters as much as the paint.

Ceilings. Flat. It hides imperfections and reduces glare.

Consider Your Walls and Light

If your walls have a lot of patches, uneven texture, or older drywall, go lower in sheen. Rooms with long walls and strong side lighting from windows also show flaws more, so a matte or eggshell will look better than satin there.

Quality Matters as Much as Sheen

Two eggshells from different product lines can perform very differently. Better paints have more binder, so they resist burnishing (shiny spots where a wall has been rubbed) and hold up to washing far better. In a busy home, a higher-quality line often matters more than moving up a sheen.

Keep It Consistent

Use the same sheen on every wall in a room. Mixing sheens across walls makes the room look patchy, especially when light hits from the side.

The STRIPES Takeaway

Choose matte or eggshell for most rooms, satin for kitchens, bathrooms, and heavy-traffic areas, and flat for ceilings. Then pick a quality product line, because a better paint will clean and wear better at any sheen.
