"One-coat coverage" is a popular selling point on paint cans, and on the right surface, a single coat can look acceptable. But in most situations, professional painters apply two coats. That's not just about making the color look right. It's about how long the paint lasts.
Why Two Coats Is the Standard
Even color. A single coat can look fine at first glance but show thin areas, roller marks, and patches when light hits the wall from the side. The second coat evens out color and sheen.
Proper film thickness. Paint manufacturers specify a target dry film thickness for durability. One coat rarely reaches it. A thicker film resists scuffing, washing, fading, and weathering much better.
Better protection outside. On exteriors, the paint film is what keeps water and UV light away from your siding. Two coats give much better protection and typically extend the life of the paint job.
Uniform sheen. One coat over a patched or porous surface can look blotchy, with some areas duller or shinier than others. A second coat smooths that out.
When One Coat Might Be Enough
A single coat can sometimes work when:
- You're refreshing a wall in the same color and the existing paint is in good condition
- The surface was already primed and you're using a high-hiding paint
- It's a low-traffic area like a closet where appearance isn't critical
Even then, results depend on the paint quality and the color. Deep colors, bright colors, and whites over darker shades almost always need two coats or more.
What About Primer Plus One Coat?
On new drywall, bare wood, or major color changes, primer is the first coat and does a different job: sealing and bonding. It doesn't replace the second topcoat. The standard system is primer plus two finish coats.
Why Estimates Differ
When comparing painting estimates, one bid may be lower because it includes only one coat. Always ask how many coats are included and what's being primed. Two estimates that look similar on price can be very different in scope.
The STRIPES Takeaway
Two coats give more even color, a more durable finish, and better protection, especially outside. One coat can work in limited situations, but for most rooms and exteriors, the second coat is what makes a paint job look finished and last.
