Can Fiber Cement Siding Be Repainted?

Can Fiber Cement Siding Be Repainted?

Yes, fiber cement siding can be repainted, and it's one of the best surfaces for holding paint. Fiber cement, including popular brands like James Hardie's HardiePlank, is common on newer homes around Atlanta. It doesn't swell and shrink much with moisture the way wood does, so a good paint job on fiber cement often lasts 10 to 15 years.

Factory Finish vs. Field-Painted

Fiber cement comes two ways:

  • Pre-finished siding (such as ColorPlus) has a baked-on factory coating. It holds color well, but eventually it will fade or you may want a new color.
  • Primed-only siding was painted on site after installation. These homes tend to need repainting sooner, especially if the builder's paint was thin.

Both can be repainted. The prep and product choice are what matter.

Prep for Repainting Fiber Cement

Cleaning. Remove dirt, mildew, and chalk with a gentle wash. Use moderate pressure and follow the siding manufacturer's cleaning guidelines. Too much pressure can damage the surface and edges.

Caulk. Check joints where siding meets trim, windows, and corners. Replace any cracked or separated caulk with a quality paintable sealant.

Repairs. Look for cracked or chipped boards, especially near the bottom of walls and around fasteners. Damaged boards should be repaired or replaced.

Spot-priming. Any exposed fiber cement, such as cut edges or chipped spots, should be primed before painting.

Choosing the Right Paint

Use a high-quality 100% acrylic exterior paint. Avoid oil-based paints on fiber cement, since the cement is alkaline and can break down oil-based coatings. Satin or low-luster finishes are common and help shed dirt.

Leave the Right Gaps Open

When caulking, don't seal the bottom edges of the lap siding where boards overlap. Those gaps allow drainage and ventilation. Sealing them can trap moisture behind the siding.

How Often to Repaint

With proper prep and quality paint, fiber cement often goes 10 to 15 years between repaints. Sun-exposed walls may need attention sooner. Watch for fading, chalking, and failed caulk as signs it's time.

The STRIPES Takeaway

Fiber cement is one of the most paint-friendly sidings available. Clean it gently, repair and caulk carefully, prime any bare spots, and use quality 100% acrylic paint for a finish that lasts for many years.
