Yes, you can paint a light color over a dark one. Navy, charcoal, deep red, and other bold colors can all be covered. But it takes more planning than repainting a similar shade. Without the right approach, the old color can show through as a shadow or uneven patches, even after two coats.
Why Dark Colors Are Hard to Cover
Light paints contain less pigment that blocks what's underneath. Deep colors are strong, and colors like red and some blues are especially stubborn. Each coat of light paint lets a little of the dark color through, so it can take three or four coats of topcoat alone to get an even result.
Start With Primer
The most efficient way to cover a dark wall is a quality primer before the new color. A good hiding primer provides a uniform, neutral base, so the topcoat only has to deliver the new color instead of covering the old one. On very dark or saturated colors, a primer tinted gray or tinted toward the new color can make an even bigger difference.
Expect at Least Two Topcoats
Even with primer, plan for two finish coats of the new color. The first coat establishes the color. The second evens out the sheen and eliminates thin spots. Cutting corners here is what leads to "ghosting," where the old color faintly shows at edges and corners.
Watch the Edges
Cutting in along ceilings, corners, and trim is where dark colors most often peek through. Brushed areas can apply less paint than rolled areas, so careful cutting with full coverage at each coat is important.
Check the Surface First
Before painting, clean the walls and fill any holes. If the dark paint was a glossy or oil-based finish, it needs a light sanding and a bonding primer. If the old color had been touched up in spots, those areas can show as uneven sheen, which primer also helps even out.
Going From Light to Dark
The reverse, painting a dark color over a light one, is usually easier. Many deep colors cover well in two coats, especially with a gray-tinted primer underneath. Very bold reds, yellows, and oranges are the exception and can need extra coats.
The STRIPES Takeaway
You can absolutely cover dark walls with light paint. Use a high-hiding primer, tint it if the color is very deep, and plan on two full coats of the new color with careful cutting in. That approach gives an even finish without the shadow of the old color showing through.
