Exterior paint is applied in the open air, so the weather on the day it goes on and the days after has a direct effect on how it looks and how long it lasts. Paint applied in poor conditions can look fine at first and still fail early. Good painters plan around the weather instead of hoping it cooperates.
Temperature
Most exterior latex paints need an air and surface temperature of at least 50°F, though some are formulated to go down to 35°F. The temperature needs to stay above that minimum while the paint dries, not just when it's applied. If paint gets too cold, it can't form a proper film and may crack, chalk early, or lose adhesion.
Very high temperatures cause problems too. Siding in direct summer sun can be much hotter than the air, which makes paint dry too fast.
Humidity
Atlanta's humidity slows the evaporation of water from latex paint. That extends drying time and leaves fresh paint vulnerable to dirt, bugs, and moisture for longer. Very humid days also leave surfaces damp in the morning, so work often starts later than people expect.
Dew Point
Dew is one of the most overlooked weather factors. When the surface temperature drops close to the dew point, moisture condenses on the siding. Painting on a surface that's within about 5°F of the dew point, or right before evening dew sets in, can cause surfactant leaching. That shows up as sticky, tan or brown streaks on fresh paint. This is why painters often stop early in the afternoon during fall and spring.
Rain
Rain on fresh paint can wash it off, cause streaking, or leave water spots. Most exterior paints need several hours of dry weather after application. Wet siding also needs time to dry before painting. Painting damp wood can lead to blistering and peeling.
Sun and Wind
Painting in direct, hot sun leads to lap marks and poor flow because the paint dries before it can level. Wind dries paint faster and blows dust and debris into wet surfaces. Professionals typically follow the shade around a house, painting each side after the sun has moved off it.
Atlanta's Best Painting Seasons
Spring and fall usually offer the most reliable conditions here. Summer is workable with good scheduling around heat and afternoon storms. Winter has many mild days that work fine, but shorter days and cold nights limit the hours available.
The STRIPES Takeaway
Temperature, humidity, dew, rain, sun, and wind all affect how exterior paint performs. A well-run project checks the forecast daily, paints each side at the right time, and pauses when conditions aren't right, because the weather on painting day affects how the paint holds up for years.
