Why Bare Wood Shouldn't Be Left Exposed

Why Bare Wood Shouldn't Be Left Exposed

When paint peels or trim is replaced, bare wood is often left exposed for a while. It might not seem urgent, but unprotected exterior wood starts deteriorating quickly, and the damage affects how well paint will stick later.

What Happens to Exposed Wood

UV damage begins fast. Sunlight starts breaking down the lignin in the surface of the wood within weeks. That leaves a weak, gray, fibrous layer on top. Paint applied over that degraded surface doesn't bond well and can peel prematurely, even if the wood looks fine.

Wood absorbs water. Unprotected wood soaks up rain and humidity, swelling and then shrinking as it dries. That cycle leads to cracking, checking, and splitting.

Rot and mildew can start. Wood that stays damp, especially on horizontal surfaces like sills, rails, and the bottom of trim, is at risk for mildew and eventually rot.

Insects are attracted. Damp, softening wood is more appealing to wood-boring insects and carpenter bees.

Why It Matters Before Painting

If bare wood has weathered and turned gray, it must be sanded back to fresh, sound wood before it's primed. Skipping that step is a common cause of early paint failure on trim and siding.

How to Protect Bare Wood

1. Prepare the surface. Remove loose paint, sand rough edges, and sand away any gray, weathered wood fibers.

2. Repair damage. Fill cracks and holes with an exterior filler, and repair or replace any soft or rotted wood.

3. Prime promptly. Use a high-quality exterior wood primer. On tannin-rich woods like cedar and redwood, use a stain-blocking primer to prevent bleeding.

4. Apply two topcoats. Quality exterior paint provides the long-term UV and moisture protection.

New Wood Needs Priming Too

New trim and siding should be primed on all sides when possible, including cut ends, before installation. End grain soaks up water quickly. Pre-primed boards should have any cuts primed on site.

The STRIPES Takeaway

Bare wood starts breaking down within weeks of exposure to sun and moisture. Sand away weathered fibers, repair damage, and prime promptly so your paint has a sound surface to bond to.
