Why Exterior Paint Preparation Takes So Long

Why Exterior Paint Preparation Takes So Long

Homeowners are sometimes surprised that a crew can spend days on their house before any new color goes on the walls. That time is not wasted. Exterior prep is where most of the work happens, and it's the main reason one paint job lasts twice as long as another.

What Happens Before the Paint

1. Protecting the property. Plants, walkways, decks, roofs, windows, light fixtures, and outdoor furniture are covered or moved. This keeps chips, dust, and paint off everything that isn't being painted.

2. Washing. The house is cleaned to remove dirt, mildew, chalk, and pollen. Then it needs time to dry, often a day or more, before painting can begin.

3. Scraping. Loose and peeling paint is removed by hand. On older homes with many layers, this can take a long time.

4. Sanding. Scraped edges are sanded so the transition to bare wood won't show through the new paint. Glossy areas are dulled for adhesion.

5. Wood repair. Soft or rotted wood on trim, sills, and fascia is repaired with epoxy or replaced.

6. Caulking. Failed caulk is cut out and joints are resealed so water can't get behind siding and trim.

7. Spot-priming. Bare wood, repairs, and stains are primed so the topcoat bonds and the color looks even.

Why Each Step Takes Time

Much of exterior prep is detailed hand work. Every window has multiple joints to inspect and caulk. Every peeling area has to be scraped and sanded. Fillers and primers need drying time before the next step. And weather can pause washing or priming.

On homes with significant peeling, older wood, or many windows and trim details, prep can take longer than painting.

Lead-Safe Practices

If a home was built before 1978, older paint layers may contain lead. Disturbing that paint requires lead-safe work practices, including containment and careful cleanup. This adds time but protects your family and neighbors.

What Happens If Prep Is Rushed

When prep is cut short, paint is applied over loose layers, dirt, open joints, or damp wood. The house looks fine at first, but peeling, cracking, and rot show up much sooner. Fixing those problems later costs more than doing the prep right the first time.

The STRIPES Takeaway

Exterior prep takes time because it's what makes paint last. Washing, scraping, sanding, repairing, caulking, and priming are the parts of the job you don't see in the final photo, but they decide how long that finish will hold up.
